The Story of Sombr
Founded: 2013
Origin: Copenhagen, Denmark
Sombr began as a small independent design studio in the heart of Copenhagen’s Nørrebro district — a neighborhood known for its mix of street culture, minimalist design, and underground art scene. The name “Sombr” was inspired by the Danish word “somber”, meaning subdued or muted — a nod to the brand’s first collection of monochrome basics and minimalist silhouettes.
Originally, Sombr wasn’t meant to be a fashion label. It started as a creative project between three friends — Emil Jørgensen, a graphic designer; Sara Lindholm, a fashion student; and Jonas “Jay” Møller, a street photographer. Their idea was to create apparel that blended nordic restraint with urban edge — clothes that felt effortless but carried attitude.
The trio began by screen-printing understated graphics onto thrifted shirts and denim, selling them at pop-ups and music venues. Their minimalist aesthetic — clean lines, natural fabrics, and muted tones — quickly caught attention among local creatives.
In 2015, Sombr opened its first brick-and-mortar store — a converted warehouse space featuring raw concrete, steel rails, and soft lighting. It became a hybrid retail + art space, hosting capsule launches, DJ sets, and photography exhibitions.
Over time, Sombr evolved into a full clothing label, producing sustainable ready-to-wear collections made in small European workshops. Its pieces became known for subtle asymmetry, tonal layering, and a quiet confidence — “clothing for those who don’t need to shout,” as their early campaign stated.
Today, Sombr has grown into an internationally recognized boutique label, stocked in select concept stores in Berlin, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, while still staying true to its roots — minimalism, authenticity, and craft.
Brand Ethos
“We design for the in-between moments — the quiet, the shadowed, the honest.”
Sombr’s philosophy revolves around emotional neutrality and sustainable intention: timeless garments that outlive trends, built for people who prefer subtlety over spectacle.
